Yes, I've seen the VR6 turbo-powered B5 A4 quattro from 034 Motorsport. Impressive as hell too.

@ Jonus: The I5 motor WILL bolt up to your stock 01A-based transmission. You'll have to fabricate a pair of mounts, butthat'll be the easy part.

The I5 is a fair bit longer than the V8, and you'll have issues with your front panel, you'll have to cut it even beyond the point where yourhood catch currently fits, meaning you'll have to fit hood pins. Not surehow your radiator, and aircon condenser (if it has one) will fit.

I5 turbo motors are:

2,226cc 10V turbo(MC) 165hp (Europe / US)
2,226cc 10V turbo(2B) 190hp (Europe only)
2,226cc 10V turbo(1B) 200hp (Europe only)
2,226cc 10V turbo(MB) 200hp (Europe only)
2,226cc 20V turbo (3B) 220hp (Europe / US)
2,226cc 20V turbo (AAN) 230hp (Europe / US)
2,226cc 20V turbo (ABY) 230hp (Europe only)
2,226cc 20V turbo (ADU) 315hp (Europe only)

The US did also have early 10V in the Audi 5000T sedan and wagon, 2,144cc, and later 2,226cc 10V turbo, when it was renamed Audi 200 turboaround 1986>, though can't remember the code for the early 2,144cc. Was KG in the UK, but US-spec cars had a different designation, will dig it out later.

personally i would go with a vr6 swap. the ls1 isn't that much better than it and the cost would be substantially less. if you wrench your own car a full vr6-t could be done for ~10k. and im pretty sure the I5 is too long for a b5, you could make it work, but it'd be costly.

thanks for the info. i was just tossing out ideas, dont really think id ever get around to swaping in an I5 though it would be sweet.

if i were u, i'd would only go with a vr6 swap if you were trying to stick with the whole vw/audi name. otherwise the ls1 is a much better way to go. it will net you much higher numbers with less money but would require alot more work.

Jonus, i take it you are looking for a 20v I5.

The 12v VR6 would be cheap as hell to do compared to a LS1. If you want a better motor, then drop in a 24V VR6 engine. Its a great motor and even with a gt35 or even gt40 has only a small amount of lag for the massive amount of power output. The nice thing about VW is that we lovetohave both compression and boost. Look at the new FSI 2.0T's, they run 10:1 and make great power even with a ko3s.

IMO the main downfall to the I5 is that the last block assembled was over 10 years ago, whereas vr6's and ls1's are still being produced. also the I5 has already been pretty much maxed out, think the most was 1400hp IIRC, whereas we've only just started to see what the vr6 can do. and i can definitely see the vr6 surpassing the I5. hell the 12v vr6 from 034 is at 648whp @40psi with a 3582r, now imagine a 24v w/ a t4 frame turbo[:-]

Not to mention a 2.2 vs a 2.4L with another cyl.

Jonus, if you REALLY want to go nuts, i would say get a 3.2 VR6 from a R32 or TT. It is a stout motor already making huge numbers and and will have plenty of displacement for making 700whp. HPA is making i believe 500awhp on a pair of gt28r's. There is also some people running around with a gt35r and even a TT with a gt4088r.

thank u. sexy *** car sans the grill. his hp goal seems to be quite modest, i would think the 3.2 24v vr6 w/ a gt40 would produce much more than that, since 034 is makin more than that with a 2.8 12v gt3582r setup.
