V8 in a B5

I have decided to not mess with my daily driver. I bought a 85 318. Lightest bimmer ever made. And I'm pretty committed to putting an LS1 in it. I have the car + engine so...Then today I found a 98 A4 for 900 bucks. So now I'm looking at that and the LS1 I have in the shop like huh. I know I have seen the B7 4.4 in there. How much work really was that? So here I am. VR6 has already been done. Plus the work they put into the O34 VR6, I feel like that much into an LS1 in a B5 would be sex with 4 rings on it.

I would think a W8 would work pretty easily (or at least it'd be straightforward), since it was available stock in the B5.5 Passats. Also, the B7 RS4 engine is 4.2, not 4.4. I've not seen a 4.2 in a B5, but I saw pics of an Audi 3.6 V8 in a B5, and that looked like a tight fit! I'm not feeling the LS1 idea, American motor in an Audi? Blasphemy, son! BLASPHEMY!

the W8 is 270 hp the LS1 is 350. You can get a 100+ out of cams alone with an LS1. I'm really tired of people who think it's horrible to put a GM motor in a German car, BMW or Audi. You get German engineered handling with American muscle. (it's all aluminum so you often lose weight, please no big heavy V8 commits.) Why not? I would happily keep with the German engine as well IF they had as much power, weighted as little, and were as cheap. BUT they just aren't. There really isn't anything that can match up with the LSX series as far as price, power, and weight are considered. Please, some one prove me wrong here. I'll be impressed.

I personally dont have any problem with you throwing in a LS1 in a A4 as i dont about a RX7 with a V8. I will admit that i was pissed to see one in an Evo. I personally dont care for V8 or NA power personally (you can easily make 300-400bhp on a 1.8t with minimum lag and stock engine all while getting far better gas milage) but agree with your points since the LS1 is a strong motor.
My only concern is in how much fab would would be involved in making it fit with tranny.

Even if the W8 only has 273hp, its still no slouch. With software, you can get over 300hp. When you figure the W8 is 4.0L, or about 240ci, that output is pretty good. Our W8 wagen is b@lls out quick, and still average 24mpg on the highway. If you fit in an LS1, I don't think you would be able to keep the AWD, but then again you might not care about that. I would imagine there would be a crap load of fabrication to make it work, a W8 would be more straight forward, but the engine is gonna cost more. For some reason I just have a problem with Chevy small blocks, there are just WAY too many. I don't even like 32 Ford street rods with a 350 V8/350 tranny. But thats just my thought, not trying to flame anyone.
