Trying to get my VCDS-Lite to work.

Again what version of vagcom do you have? You need 409.1 for that cable. And by test I mean when you go to the options menu, select whatever port you're using and press the test button. A window should pop up with the results. I never had any luck with that cable, I even went as far as installing XP on another partition and it just didn't want to work. Did you change the port in device manager?
I just gave up after a couple of days screwing with it, returned the cable and bought a 908.1 cable, which was completely plug and play.

No way to get it legally, you'll have to figure that out yourself. Also, good luck if you have 64bit Vista, drivers and buggy and the software is outdated and buggy on 64bit Windows. Did the cable come with a CD? If it did it should have the right version or vagcom on it.

OK. I have a cheap cable and it was a pain, but I did get it to work.
I had to go into the device manager, and go to ports, and play around with com2 and com3. (USB means Universal Serial Bus. Serial ports are com ports - or more accurately, com ports are serial ports).
When I went into VCDS-Lite, options, test - I tried all of the com ports and took the com port that had the least latency.
Also - what else do you have configured on your computer? Hotsync, Blackberry sync and other sorts of apps will mess with com port settings. Also you might have to disable your virus scanner (but probably not).
Before you make changes, take notes as to what you are changing - just in case you need to change it back later.
Theres a certain amount of trial/error to get it to work.
Good luck
