Default Transmission strong but not always

Ok so my problem is my transmission is making like an rc car sound when its driving cold and makes other strange whining sounds. Sometimes it takes a long time to find 5th and it likes to search for gears alot. It has 146k on it and it runs strong other then these few problems. I read a pages of post but cannot find something similar to the sound i am hearing. It is rather loud and is more prominent in reverse. I know it cant be normal. Its just a regular automatic. no tiptronic or anything......i know its boring. Any ideas....any thing would help out alot.

Sounds like you should do a tranny fluid change.

yeah i was thinking of that and then i kept on reading about how it can mess up the tranny entirely. im like 50/50 on it. the mech. at audi said he wouldnt recommend it but seemed excited when i didnt care it would cost 600 bucks. and some people say it will and some people say it wont.

Well i bought the car used and I have no record of if it ever had any tranny fluids changed and since it has so many miles on it he said he wasnt sure how it would respond to the new fluid, and some people on here are saying it messes it up if it hasnt been done in a long time. so i guess i can take a chance and do it or just deal with it taking a little longer to find some gears sometimes..But the wierd part is, if i get on it...the the tranny seems to like to work harder then casual driving....idk
