Exclamation tranny problem

i have a 98 audi a4 1.8tq automatic tip 145,000 miles on it. it is stuck in limp mode i think cuz the factory radio says safe and the check engine, abs,air bag lights are on. It feels like its stuck in 4th gear wen u put it in drive.. but wen u put it in a gear it jerks the car, and its kinda ruff to get it in gear... but the cluster dosent lite up any gears like my other audi does. i checked all the fuses and there good. the guy before me, had the tranny cooler lines hooked to a copper pipe tht interlooped the fluid, so i put a hayden transcooler and tht didnt do anything. so a transmission guy told me to take the two ends off the battery terminals together for 20 secs and itll clear all codes. i did and it worked but still in limp mode. i dont belive the tranny is bad. is there anything to check before i give up and buy another tranny? i did hook my vag-com to it but it didnt show any codes at all while the check engine light was on.... any ideas i would gladly appricate it.

I would check your TCU to see if it's sitting in water. But I doubt it if vag-com didnt pull any codes for it. Last I would jack the car up and drop your tranny pan If you see a lot of gray "fuzz" on the magnets start saving for a new transmission. Check and report back.

The TCM=transmission control module is located under your passenger side floor panel. This is the cpu that controls your tranny.

You should be getting incorrect gear ratio codes soon,if the jerking persists, this happend to me,where my tranny would not shift into 4th or 5th gear,it would shift from 1st to 3rd with no problem, when the TCM sends the signal to shift into 4th gear, the tranny jerks the car, then the gear shift back down to 3rd.

I since have replaced my tranny 2 month ago,no more shifting issues,i can shift in all higher gears now on my 01 A4 1.8T AWM Automatic

Yours is sounding like mine did except I had no other lights on. Just had 4th gear and reverse. On the instrument cluster the gear indicator was blank. I checked out all the fuses and wiring but nothing wrong there. I pulled the front passenger side seat and removed the kick panel and pulled back the carpeting to find the foam soaked and dripping wet. This has been leaking so bad and long that the floor boards are rusted out on that side. I am pissed at AUDI for this mess. Anyway I got another TCU and replaced mine and the tranny is back to normal now. I took a squirt bottle and ran water down the right front sun roof drain and it wasn't plugged. But had I not had the kick panel out I wouldn't have seen the water dripping behind it. Seems 90% of the water went out the bottom of the drain but 10% dripped behind the kick panel and rotted out the floor. BTW the TCU in mine was inside a plastic box which kept it dry. It was just bad not wet.

Good Luck!
