Default Automatic Transmission problem

hello everyone,
I have a 99 audi a4 1.8L with an automatic transmission. about 4 months ago, i was driving and a bearing in the alternator went. The entire car shut off and i heard a loud bang(not sure where from). I had the alternator repaired but then i noticed that the gears were giving trouble to change from gear 2-3. When i was almost home, i stopped on a hill and when i was about to drive off, the car would not move and smoke was coming out from under the car. I then took it to a mechanic and the said that he needed an overhaul kit. Today i got back the car and the mechanic said that he was not able to fix it because he cannot figure out what was wrong(what a retard). He plugged in his computer somewhere and checked the sensors and said it nothing was wrong with it. CAN SOMEONE HELP PLEASE?

and as you can see, i dont know much about cars

For the past 3 years the brake pad wear symbol has been on, mechanic said I needed part of the loom replaced as it was broken somewhere, (pads were all new and connected up)
Was changing the front pads and noticed a small nick in the wire at the connector, re-soldered it and light is now off. Mechanic might have been trying to fleece me with the loom story!

My son is now a 2nd year apprentice mechanic and it was him that spotted the nick. He's now doing all the jobs on the audi, even changing the aux belt and tensioner. All is left to do is get the air bag light off. His OBC reader says side airbag ignitor.

Default Oil filler cap foam

Hi, I am looking at buying a 2002 A4 3.0 with 127,000 miles from an upscale new car dealer. The car looks and drives really nicely, but I noticed there was a light yellow foam on the oil filler cap after I drove the car for about 10 miles, the outside temperature was about 48 degrees. When I brought it to the attention of the salesman, he said he would have the mechanic look at it. I called him back later that day and he said the mechanic told him it's a common occurrence on these cars. Does anyone have experience with this issue? thanks

No that's not a regular thing foam on oil cap I have an 01 1.8t and never seen anything remotely like that problem with used audi's is most people that by them new have no idea how to take care of a car and have more money than brains therefor the vehicles are neglected then when things start going wrong and breaking down they trade them in and you get a salesman being a salesman and trying to sell you someone else's problem take the car to an Audi vw specialist that has nothing to do with the dealer and see what they say !!

I'd be leery of a suspected coolant leakage into the oil if foamy emulsion was found in the oil filler cap. Possibly leaking head gasket? My 2.8 has never exhibited such, even on a cold rainy day when chances for that would be highest. I've seen it occur mostly on American V-8 engines with leaky head gaskets or intake manifold gaskets.

Default A4 wear and tear

great thead. Ive got a 2001 1.8T AWM Q.

bought with 120K- seems thats about the time a lot of stuff starts showing up.

done so far:
cam position sensor
Secondary Air Pump and Hose
Coil packs
Coolant Expansion Tank and cap
Coolant temperature switch
Thermostat
Suspension
Rear Shock Towers (rusted as hell)
new brakes/rotors
waterpump, timing belt, pulley

On the to do list:
leaking fluids in the front
suspect passenger side axle seal and power steering
loose door handle
pixilated center on dash

bearings so far so good
sunroof seems to be OK!!

If anyone can point me to a good DIY thread for any of the above, that would be outstanding.

great forum/great thread.
