I have a 98 2.8

word to the ticking, mine just started

also common in all 2.8's.. cam seals leak.. so to whoever posted about your oil leak start there!

For everyone else with oil leaks, find the shop you want to take your car, see if they have a UV light.. buy two bottles of UV Engine Dye ($5 a bottle or so.. I found mine at NAPA auto parts, I don't know where else they sell it) put in the engine dye and a quart of oil, drive about 50-60 miles.. THEN take it into the shop so they can see ALL of the places its leaking oil.. speaking from experience here, no fun getting the cam seals replaced and its still leaking oil from other small gaskets below the original oil leak that are hard to detect from your engine being soaked from the cam seal leak!

Long winded.. sorry

I just bought a 98 A4 2.8 Quattro. The car drives solid but man the list of small problems is big. At least she was way under blue book value.

Dead battery
Bad Alternator
Ignition Switch Connector fried fried taking the starter with it
D/S headlight washer missing
Sometimes grinds when shiffting the Tiptronic. Shift selector $485. Man. Recall
Bad tie rods
Warped brake rotor. Not sure which one yet
Think soem rear suspension bushings have gone bad
Leaking at the oil pan
Leaking at the valve covers

Prior owner DIY **** ups:
Loose ground wire laying across the engine
Loose headlights
A relay laying on top of the engine wrapped in electrical tape
Cooling fan hardwired to the battery so it never turns off
Screws drilled into the front bumper for his Texas license plate
Missing bottom plastic engine shield
Missing top engine cover

I was not able to personaly see the car before I bought it. I do love the car though. The problems are slowing getting fixed and the engine is having a hi performance rebuild with pistons, valves, balance and blueprint. The whole nine years.

These problems are what I've found so far.

Yes to the powersteering rack...mine is slowly leaking...

Other than that, no problems with it...except the timing belt/waterpump...but that i changed early!

What I've done since May:
1. windshield wiper transmission
2. combination switch for lights
3. Timing belt, water pump, other belts, pullys, thermostat and housing-Did all this for piece of mind.
4. Radiator

What needs to be done:
1. Clutch.
2. Radio does not work, still figuring out.
3. Sunroof
5. ABS Module

Love my Audi, happy to spend the time with it. Drives great!

ABS module most likely. Do a search on this forum there is a ton of info. I'm sending mine to modulemaster (www.modulemaster.com). Think there is 5 torx bolts to take it off if I'm not mistaken. You could drive without the module, but you have to send it away for them to rebuild it. They give you a 5 year warranty. I think you get a discount if you mention this forum. Costs $200 and rebuilt module will automatically reset the lights.

Exclamation

We've had the B5 2001 A4 1.8TQ since new. So here is the list of stuff that has naturally broken so far (unnatural = driver broke it)

-Fog light switch 521 miles
-Sunroof switch (it still works, but is finicky) 40k miles
-Vaccuum pump cracked 47k miles
-Ignition coil recall 54k miles
-Vaccuum line from intake manifold 68k miles
-Both rear wheel bearings around 91k miles (note: when we replaced one side, the other failed 1 week later)
-All 4 coil packs (note, if 1 goes, all WILL go shortly thereafter. In other words, you might as well buy 4 at the same time) at 96k miles
-Coolant temp sensor at 108k miles
-Mass airflow sensor at 109k miles
-Steering tie rods at 111k miles, both driver and passenger sides x 2
-Clutch, flywheel, belts, tensioners and water pump at about 133k miles (note: it probably could have gone longer)
-Driver side lower trim
-Passenger side lower trim
-Various front control arm pieces
-Replaced all 4 brake calipers about 150k miles
-Missing lines on the center console LCD
-Missing lines on the radio
-Power steering high pressure hose 164k miles
-Center muffler broken weld 168k miles
-Airbag light is on when cold, but shuts off (traced to driver seat connector)
-ABS unit leaking at 191k miles
-Rear driver side caliper leaking 199k miles
-Valve cover gasket at 201k miles
-Alternator at 202k miles???

It seems like every 100k miles, there's a "wave" of items that brake at the same time... I'm thinking that at 300k miles, it will be time to dump the car...

While rummaging through my wife's service history, I noticed that she changed to the H&R coil overs at 31k miles. They are still going strong!

Also, we did "oil analysis" thru Blackstone Labs - they came out VERY good. We have been changing the synthetic oil when the car tells us to = about every 10k miles.

Overall, we have been very happy with the car since we did most of the work ourselves. If we couldn't, I'd be pushing that car off a cliff as I can only imagine what we'd be paying for the hourly costs....
