do the auto trannys have a dip stick? thats one way of doing it. or unhook tranny cooler line to dump into a bucket, while filling, that will flush it.

My 01 B5 AWM auto doesn't have a tranny dipstick, the transmission is sealed, need a machine to pump in the fluid.

This is a pretty sketchy topic.

Audi says the ATF is a "lifetime" fluid. Therefore the transmission is sealed, and in theory would never need maintenance. Now every time I hear of this issue coming up, there are 2 main sides.

You can do a drain and fill. Pull the plug, drain the fluid, fill to spec at temp (via vagcom)
This is what most people do, and has mixed results. Some say it helped, others say nothing happened, and some ruined transmissions.

My dad the 20+ year mechanic talked to me about this because I was going to do a flush as a preventative maintenance. Never "power flush" a non american transmission. A complete fluid change (which is what it is vs about a half fluid change with the drain and fill) will usually wash out the friction modifier, therefore trashing your clutches and basically there goes your transmission. (he has in his contract that he will not be liable for any failures due to a ATF flush, because it fails more than succeeds)

He goes know of a bottle of friction modifier you can buy, but neither of us have looked into it that much.

Now on the other hand you have a sketchy tranny anyway, so you can take that gamble, and if it works yay, if not, well you just killed it a bit sooner.

The only person I know of succeeding with a drain and fill is nick broderick, because he busted his transmission pan and had to add new fluid

what makes it so complicated is that with a automatic 01 B5,it could be the TCM or the tranny or other electronical components that are causing the issue. Mine won't go into 4th gear,it's not"slipping" but it's kicking back down to 3rd gear, when trying to go into 4th gear. i drive it via tiptronic with no problem. it kicks down from 3rd to 2nd and 1st from a complete stop as it should normally.

I sometimes would get all the gear lights illuminate, when i try to shift into 4th or 5th gear manually by tipping the stick up twice fast, then the car will still drive,i think it's in 1st or 2nd,i would then have to pull over and turn the car off and back on again to reset the ecu.

This rarely happens,if never at all, only sometimes, when i try to make it go into 5th gear,4th gear just gives a slight jerk, then kicks back down to 3rd gear.

I am going to buy another used TCM for 100.00 near me and see if this is the issue. the one i have installed now is a replacement of the one that was already installed,my mechanic at the time claimed he couldn't communicate with the TCM with his 3,000.00 scan tool and it was shot and i needed to replace it. So i bought one off ebay for 195.00 and he installed it and the car drive fine after it was installed.

About 5 months later,i got a jerk while in drive, couldn't get into 4th,kicks back down to 3rd and continues to drive fine,so i drive it locally on the street, try to stay off the highway,i do about 4000RPM doing 60MPH that isn't good for the gas milage or the engine, let alone 3rd gear with a nasty check engine light
