Default Tachometer signal?

New to the forum but not new to audi. My car just rolled 245000 this morning but that isn't really that relevant to my question. So my speedometer and my tach stopped working a few weeks ago and im thinking its just the vss cause that's what the speedometer gets its signal from but when I look at a writing diagram for the instrument cluster it shows me 2 different diagrams One doesn't show anything about what the tach gets its signal from and the other which is the audi diagram just shows a wire with a number that says rpm signal rite next to the vss. so a little help would be nice.

Do a scan for codes and see if you there are no codes for a bad sensor. First erase all the codes then go for a ride and save the new codes.
It can also be the magnetic ring that is used by the sensor to read the speed. Check this for a better explanation: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ausible-Signal

Did a scan for codes and nothing for the vss but it started working on the drive to work then stopped working so I think its not grounding properly so I'm gonna check that out

If the tach and speedo quit at the same time than it is very unlikely that it is the VSS. It is most likely a power or ground issue.

I have power to it so I'm gonna say its a ground issue only problem with that is all that I can find in wiring schematics is that it is in the left side engine compartment and that's all it says so its pretty hard to find where it actually grounds
