Default synthetic vs conventional oil

i am close to getting my first oil change, and my dad keeps saying that i should use conventional oil in my 2.8 just because it is cheaper and he uses it in all the cars we have
i hear people saying that we should only use synthetic oil in our cars, will i see any difference with conventional oil? btw my car takes a little bit of oil is that bad?

Yes, it's bad, but it might not be TOO bad depending on how it's using/leaking it. Check all the oil seals including the rear cam tensioner seals and check all the front seals that you can see - or at the very least check if there's oil under/around the engine and check the timing belt for oil, though it probably won't get wet unless a front seal is leaking badly.

Take off your suction pump - this thing http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-...Pump/ES252639/ - and clean it out good with carb cleaner, brake cleaner or degreaser. They clog up and can make seals leak due to pressure buildup in the engine.

You can run Auto-RX for an OCI and see if it helps if the stuff above doesn't. It's really liked on BobIsTheOilGuy.com which is THE discussion forum for oil-related stuff. Auto-Rx: http://www.auto-rx.com/

For oils, it is imperative with VAG engines to use high quality oils. Use only Mobil 1 0w40 (do NOT use 5w30 - it's not total crap, but 0w40 is MUCH better and should be the same price) or German Castrol 0w30 (from Autozone only, and it MUST be 0w30 to be "German Castrol" - should say European Formula on the bottle) or Amsoil. Or Pennzoil Platinum.

If you must go with conventional oil, run Castrol GTX only. Period. Do not touch any other conventional oil. I will find out where you live and smack you if you do.

Our cars can use one of three sizes of oil filters. You do not want the smallest one. I forget the part numbers, but look into it. Avoid Fram and STP. Bosch, Mobil 1, Amsoil, K&N, Purolator and Wix are some good oil filter brands. Some people here use the Mann brand filter but I have no experience with that one.

I think he meant to say do NOT put cheap oil in that car...

Agreed... synthetic only, always, and if you have a leak/ need to add a little hear an there, make sure you only add synthetic. Autozone and places like that have started selling the 5Q+ jugs for fairly inexpensive, so a do it yourself job doesn't cost an arm and a leg...
