motor could be dead.

also sunroof switch can fail. push the switch up gently and turn it to see if any thing. sunroof switch is a common problem on audis. switch sometimes lose connection u have to take the cover off and unscrew 2 screws to fix it. easy job, takes < 5mins.

bad sunroof motors/switches are fairly common on B5's. for the record, OP, there's a little crank on the inside of the fuse panel door that you can use to close the glass if it gets stuck open

Turns out the switch wasnt pluged in I guess for a reason. I pluged it back in and cleaned the contacts and when I turned it on it made a loud clicking noise it opend but then wouldnt shut and I had a hard time doing it manually cause it would just keep clicking like its stripped. The noise is coming from the location of the screw to close it manually. Any Ideas.

im in the same boat with my audi a4 1998 2.8L v6 , opens fine, won't close. manually it sounds like a gear is loose or stripped. quite annoying.
