Its no big deal. I'm just saying he can't expect to get that price anywhere, and he could barely get the job done as a diy for that cost.

My tb job was $300. I went to a private shop and the mechanic was a former tech at the local audi stealership.

If you got a $300 t-belt job then i don't see how the tensioner, roller, t-stat, waterpump, coolant, and other belts were done as well for that cost, like they should be. If you paid someone to do only the timing belt itself then that is non sense to me.

To address one of the new problems, do your own valve cover gaskets. You need 8mm socket and ratchet, a swivel attachment, a 6" extension, and a couple screwdrivers. 1/4" drive works best since they're smallest and can get at the valve cover nuts the easiest. Buy two VC gaskets for $25 each from ECS Tuning, and put aside an hour to do the job. It's very easy to do.

What about the tensioner? 97-99 1.8T's come with a shitty tensioner that has a high rate of failure. It would be almost pointless to replace the belt without the tensioner. If you didn't get that done, I'd say 1. Start sweating, 2. Find a new mechanic and 3. Find a new mechanic. The roller can just get noisy when the bearings get lose. But I have heard a couple stories about the roller bearings getting really bad and siezing up, causing serious engine drag and pretty much melting the timing belt till it breaks as it sides over the stuck roller.

This thread just got me thinking about whether or not this had been done to my A4 (which I was pretty sure it had). I just looked through the service records of my Audi I bought in late October, and according to the latest receipt the tensioner and timing belt were replaced roughly 600 miles before I bought it, and the mechanic wrote "updated" next to the tensioner. Was there an updated tensioner available for the 97-99 1.8T?
