hey guys,

i'm trying to help a friend out with his audi. there is a relativley new clutch in it and the trans. can shift through all the gears, but if you let your foot off the clutch (in gear or not) the car doesnt move. the speedometer works, so the problem lies after the speedo sensor. its got AWD andi dont think its a busted cv since the car would still move if a cv was broken. any ideas? its a awd, 5 spd, quattro (dont know the # of cyls.) .

Not sure why the speedometer can move, but it sounds to me like the clutch is burned out.

 

the speedo would still work with a broken axel so that could be the problem.

 

+1. The problem isnt the spedometer if its working when the clutch is let out. The only way that could happen is if its actually spinning.

 

fairly new clutch doesn't mean anything and a semi burnt up clutch might still let the car start


i broke all the teeth off my clutch on my s-10 doing a hard shift durring a burnout....... and you could press it in to get the truck to start, but when you let it out, you would hear a horrible grinding noise and the truck would die, cause there were no teeth to catch with..... not saying that is his problem, but you guys might be looking at a new clutch, if so get a beefier clutch or get an auto, cause the driver can't drive a standard tranny

 

i must say this is a very weird problem. the speed sensor is incorporated into the abs sensor which is on the hub. are you trying to say the tach works? the install of the clutch may have gone wrong somewhere. also check your brakes. they may have seized up or something.

 

i thought of something else... he could have cracked the transmissioncasing and broken off teeth on some gears. thats what happened to my caralthough my speedo wasnt working either so i dunno

 

are you sure? becuase i know you can disable the ABS sensor and still have a speedometer. I thought the sensors there are just for telling the traction control if the wheels are spinning at different speeds. normally the speedo sensor is in the tranny
