First, when you cut the wheel abruptly or come to the end of the steering wheel rotation - the RPMs drop down and it feels like the engine wants to stall a little bit. Although the car did not stall out it seemed somewhat odd.

Second, there was a check engine light on and he told me that the 'coils' with the sparkplugs need to be replaced. Im not completely in the dark when it comes to automotive intelligence but im not exactly sure what this means. He said it would run me about 300 bucks to fix.

The engine sounded strong but it did make a noise that i wasnt too sure of. It didnt sound terrible like it was about to explode or anything, the only way i can describe it is like one of those 1.slow VW Jetta's at around 150k miles, a faint clicking sound.

The car has about 83k miles on and the TB has been replaced along with the water pump so maybe the this sound can be chalked up to the fresh belt?

just trying to find some input, and i appreciate any comments or suggestions. I think i may buy because the price is soooo right.

oh - Its a 1998 2.8 quattro ~83k miles
Overall the car sounds good, you never mentioned how much they're asking for it, color combo, auto/manual? It's always hard to diagnose a car over the internet, but these car have a terrible turning radius. You're probably just feeling the power steering stressed because it's at the end of it's turning radius. That's good that the TB and water pump were done, they should be done around 80k miles, so this saved you a lot of money. I wouldn't recommend buying it if that wasn't done. The click noise is also probably nothing. This German cars make a lot of funny noises, especially if you're not used to them. These are great cars, and the Quattro system is awesome! That has really relatively low miles for a 98. I have an 01, that I bought last year with 83k on it.

Yes, I would make him fix it. If it's a coil pack problem it is about $100 to fix. If he know what it is, ask him to fix it before you buy it. This is not an unreasonable request.

...Stock they are faster than a 1.8T. There is nothing wrong with a 2.8. I almost wish I got a 2.8 so I would have just lowered it and gotten new wheels and not constantly think about a BT. Plus at least it's a 6 cyl, not matter what we still have dinky 4 cly cars. Hmm, BT or V8 swap...

GOOD LUCK!

its a 98 6 cyl - black ext black inter with tan trims. manual xmission. tb and wp have been done, he also replaced sparkplugs and wires. The only negatives about the car is teh CEL which is that coil thinger which ill just lowball the price a lil bit, and the fact that the bastard was literally smoking in the car as i was test driving it.

what sort of idiot smokes a butt in the car while a potential buyer is test driving it. that pissed be off so bad.

he is askign for 4300

Nice, like I said above though, I would make him fix the CEL before you buy it.

The price seems high to me, maybe someone else can weigh in on this. Like I said it has "relatively" lows miles for the year, but it's still a pre-face lifted 98. I think somewhere between the low to mid 3's is more reasonable.

I can't stand people smoking in their cars. That was one of the first questions I asked when looking for my car...Do you smoke/Did any previous owners smoke in the car? I don't care what anyone says, that smell does not go away. My friends always get pissed cause I won't let them smoke in my car...no one eats in my car either haha.

Default i was in ur shoes not too long ago

found a 98 a4 FWD v6 as well.. not a quattro but who needs quattro in SoCal??

first off the loud clicking noise seems like u need to check more things out. maybe there is an oil leak and one of ur cam chain tensioners is oil deprived. but then again, 2.8's are know to be noisy. check for oil leaks, drive it for a while then open the engine and inspect.

but in the end, i suggest u take it to a mechanic. have him check it out. if the price is good then paying a mechanic 50 bucks to look at it wont be so bad. plus if he has nothing to hide he should comply. if he gets iffy about u taking it to a mechanic then u should start worrying. other than that i'd go for it!

also, 2.8's are more reliable and i don't plan on modding mine or trying to be fast or anything. plus i got an Automatic so modding it would be ...dumb.

If your getting a Audi you need quattro. Snow or not it's about the handeling difference. I paid 3500 for mine it's a 96 with 140k blk/blk man trans 2.8 and some how it's a bit faster then my cousins 99.5 1.8t. But his was automatic.

i really appreciate your input guys. I offered him his full asking price only if he can get my documentation of the TB and WP and if he fixes the CEL. He agreed that that seemed pretty fair.
