"Remember: Carb cleaner can substitute brake cleaner"

it IS nasty stuff, but that is straight out of the ASE textbook.

both are nasty, but carb is more nasty.

It's taught that carb is strong enough to be sub'ed for BPC but brake parts cleaner isnt strong enough for a carb cleaner job.

Huh? Brake parts cleaner will blast away huge amounts of built up grease. I could never get carb cleaner to do that by itself. Maybe that goes against the ASE text book, but that has been my personal experience.

The ASE supplied text books are sometimes dated. For example, ASE recommends petroleum jelly to be used when assembling automatic transmissions. These days, every manufacturer specifies what synthetic assembly grease to use and usually recommend against petroleum jelly based lubes. Yet, ASE says to use it. It's in the book and on the test. But it's dated. Does anyone even use carb cleaner anymore??

Use up to date books. Thompson-Delmar's "Today's Technician" series will prepare you for the test and are actually useful books.

Now I know why I don't post on forums. It's a bunch of people, with no formal education on the topic and never had to do this kind of work to feed their families, cutting down your advice. There is more then one way to skin a cat, gentlemen. I use carb cleaner everyday btw, and the rule of thumb was because if you ran out of BPC and that customer is pissy and you need to finish the job. It's nothing about being out of date.

Carb cleaner WILL NOT damage brake parts and ABS sensors, and it is strong enough to do the job.

I give someone advice to help with his problem, and I have a group of people saying "CARB CLEANER?!?! OMG WTF!?!??" You show me your ASE certificates and I'll shut up. Okay?

ASE Master L1. Lots of us ARE techs. And there are MANY more on this board that have quite a bit more experience than I do. I don't know it all, and I don't often brag or put up credentials. If you'd like some help, PM me or one of the mods, but don't put everyone down. And for the record, no one said OMG WTF.

Actually, that's the best option and is recommended by Porsche during installation.
