Shifting not so smooth...

Shifting not so smooth...
99 2.8qm here.... I have noticed for a few months that my a4 isn't shifting as smooth as it used to. The transition from 3rd --> 4th --> 5th is silky, but from 1st --> 3rd there are some issues. I don't believe it's a bad clutch, but who knows with 180k.
To make things more clear...imagine a slight delay (less than a second) in the gear catching when shifting up...Is there any maintenance I can do to smooth out the shifting process so it will shift smoother without the occasional catching issues? I have never dropped a gear, it is just a small nuisance that I am always subconsciously looking to avoid, ie babying 1st --> 3rd gear shifts. I change my oil every 3k with mobile 1 as well...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

That might be the source of the problem. If you change it and it's still the same, then it might be a sign that the tranny is getting worn.

Try the less expensive route first. Get Audi trans fluid and do a fluid change. It can work wonders. You also might look into replacing shifter bushings. With that mileage they could easily be worn out and causing the problem. Someone on here was talking about brass replacement bushings awhile ago (maybe mike2ptzero?). I'd go that route. I had bronze bushings in my Z and shift action afterward was rifle-bolt precise. Do that and a fluid change and if it's not a fix then you'll have to look deeper.

I don't have them on this car - they were on my 300ZX. Do a search for "shift bushings" or something like that and the thread I mentioned should cone up. Also try www.purems.com and www.034motorsport.com - one of them may sell the bushings.
