RE: Shifting my 01 1.8T
Welcome to the forum.
There is lots of good information here when you search.
Here is a list of tips.
Assume the previous owner didn't take care of his car. If you want it to last, change all the fluids, and put in fresh synthetic. This includes the transmisson gear oil, gear oil in all the differentials, flush the brake lines with fresh
DOT 4 fluid (not DOT 5), get a small turkey baster and swap out the power steering fluid and put in some fresh Pentosin 11S (avail on line) Do not use generic power steering fluid or all the seals will go.
Switch to synthetic oil 0W/40 and change every 5K miles. Check the battery electrolyte level and top up with distilled water. Change the air filter and the cabin filter. Put in fresh spark plugs (NGK platinum)
If you are above 80K miles, it is time to replace the timing belt, tensioner, waterpump etc. The car has an interference engine and it is toast if the timing belt slips/snaps) Coolant is OEM G12, pink. Avail on the net. If it is timing belt time, you can get a full kit from ECS tuning.
Check under the hood and get a small mechanics mirror, check all the hoses, vacuum hoses and other hoses for leaks, cracks etc. Behind the air filter box under the black plastic cover are some vacuum lines and a grey and white check valve. This gets rubbed by a clip and often has a hole in it so check to see if it is rubbed through.
Consider investing in a vagcom. In the meantime go to Autozone and have them scan for codes and clear them which they will do for free. Write down the numbers, drive for a couple of hunder miles and see what new codes appear.
