The front control arms were replaced, and the engine felt good.

Never mind this. I looked up some other opinions on the 1.8, and it's hellish. I might start looking at the 2.8.

The 1.8 will give you a more tunable engine. If thats what you are going for.

So, I've turned down the 1.8 engine. I went to a couple other sources online and found atleast 50 people bashing the reliability. When I asked some friends and family, eveyone knew multiple people that had the engine take a **** on them. I'll just avoid it.

What's the consensus on the C4 S4? Are they very expensive to maintain?

I have a 1.8t and mine is reliale as all hell. I would have to say that it depends on the previous owners. I got 170,000 on mine and not a tick or anything. Routine maintenence saves you the trouble in the long run. More people own the 1.8 is why you have more complaints about it.

111K on mine no problems at all with the 1.8T Did TB at 70K
Very few problems with the car actuallyl, had it since new though.
Synthetic oil every 5K and no oil ever added between changes.
Stays right at full.
Best engine Ive ever had!
I hope the 2.0T is as good in the next one.

I think that more people who run their cars hard will go for the 1.8t because its a turbo. They dont take care of the engine and this leads to problems. But with proper maintenance - synthetic oil, tb etc. - you should have a reliable car that gets good gas mileage.

do you mean b5 s4? It has a 2.7tt (twin turbo) and is more expensive to maintain than the 1.8t. The 2.8 NA is a good solid motor.

Get the car, you'll love it. I just got mine the week of Thanksgiving, a 2001 Audi A4 with 92K on it, and I love this car. I'd been searching for awhile for an BMW 3 series or Audi, and I ran into so many with over 100K that where over priced or damaged, so many with **** poor repaints, and then I found mine at an insane price I bought it the next day. (Found it on Sunday, no banks open otherwise I would of bought it then) But the fact his we had a rental 325i for a week and I love the Audi more now.

You'll love it. I love mine.
