i have recently bought a 2001 audi a4
i would like to put an aftermarket cd deck in the car to boost the sound maybe wire up some subs later on..

you have to go to your local best buy or car audio shop and purchase a set of vw.audi radio keys. make sure that you get four some key sets only come with 2. then insert them into the holes that are located in each corner of the radio. they are located near buttons and are kind of hidden. they are little slots. have fun with the sound. myself is looking to do the same. i have a 4 channel and 5 farad cap already and slowwly piecing it all together then going to put it in all at once.

true about the removal tools. i think best buy calls them european radio removal kit, and then you need the appropriate wiring harness for the car. I'm pretty sure you need the same one i used, which was only available online. here's the link to best buy.com

and you also need the dash kit as well. supposed easier to find, i found mine at jacks stereo, was like $50. then you also need the aftermarket deck. if you plan on running subs makes you get one with the high/low-pass filter. I have 2-12" Rockford P-1s in my 2000 A4, and they sound amazing. Hope this helps. Actually just finished my audio setup.

Yeah, i'd probably get the keys. I made some out of metal I had laying around and wasted a while fiddling with tin-snips, lol.
Not any more difficult than other stereo installs I've done. I did get the harness, but only half of it was good. I have the Bose 8 speaker system, so only the half of the harness with the power, acc etc worked. The speakers in my setup all go from the doors and back deck to the rear to the bose amp. I had to run all new wire. Yippy.
Depends if you're Bose or not. Not sure if this varies from year to year. I'm a 98.5 30v.
