RE: rebuilding engine
I heard that on BMW as well. I had to rebuild my engine and I regret doing it. The mechanic is very picky and he only puts the best, but he miscalculated the costs big time and I ended up paying a lot of money for it. In my case, it was either rebuilding it or buying a used engine...I had no other choices due to a frozen oil pump. I had to replace valves, oil pump, timing components...you name it. Since he was there, he also replaced everything that could go bad on the car.
I'm a newby and don't have much experience on Audi's, but based on my journey, I'd advise not to touch it unless you have to, as long as you replace the timing belt religiously, I wouldn't open the engine. If somebody disagrees, trust them...chances are they have a lot more experience and know much more about Audi's engines...I'm just trying to help, base on what happened to me.

RE: rebuilding engine
you dont have to, but its not a bad idea if you have the money. if you do it, buy another engine and rebuild that. its easier that way, plus you still get to drive your car and if something goes wrong you still have a backup. and also think of your goals for the car before you do it, if you want a crazy HP car, then thats the time to do it. it gets expensive quick though.
and for the shameless plug: im selling my block for $350 and its great for a rebuild. theres a thread for it in the classifieds.
good luck.[sm=signs003.gif]

RE: rebuilding engine
If you want to know the status of your engine do a compression and leak down test. If you have < 140 in any cyl or more than 10% different between the highest and lowest you need a rebuild. For that all you really need is new rings with a hone depending on the engines wear
