Default Rear Diff guru needed

well of course i have a noisy rear, it has to do with my diet....but seriously, can anyone tell me whats in the case ( the casing where the drive shaft enters) that is in front of the rear differential?
coupla questions
Does it share Lube oil with the rear?
and if it does not share lube, how do i check it?
i seem to have a fair amount of play on that input shaft?
I have a noise that sounds like a dry roller bearing when coming to a stop, sounds like its coming from that area.
thanks in advance for any help/info

Not sure but my best guess would be that they are the same. The only difference there might be would be a slight gear ratio change.
