Here's some good info on Audi/VW approved oils.

I use Mobil 1 0w-40. Some people have had problems with royal purple. You will also want to use the oversized filter, the 1.8t has sludge issues.

Otherwise I'd go with a good brand like Amsoil and run something like 5w40 or perhaps 0w40.
Use a Wix 51333 or equivalent filter. Avoid Fram, though.

This is why all drag racers use manuals; because the TH350/400 or Powerglide is slow. Also, show me a clutch that can handle 3000 hp. Not trying to start fights, just clearing up misinformation.

sry but TH350/TH400 are definitely showing their age and racers still using them are only doing so because they haven't gotten with the times.
Some automatics are great. Transmissions from the 1960s are not.

Theres nothing wrong with an automatic trasmission man... all the 'purists' always try to talk down on them, yeah on a street car they may suck up a bit more power from the drivetrain, but overall, require a 1/4 of the maitenance most sticks do. A simple shift kit and maitenance to the valve body re-gains some of the lost power, firms up the shifts and can be just as mean as any manual...
i'm even considering putting a built 4R70W auto trans with a 3500+ stall in my mustang because when you get to a certain power level it becomes tedious and unenjoyable to drive, especially in traffic. Also, a missed shift while racing can be absolutely disasterous to a car with big power. I saw a Viper break his transmission, driveshaft and bust almost all the valves in the heads at Englishtown in NJ when missing a shift between 3-4. I must say that a Vipers V10 sounded killer at 12000 rpms in 2nd gear.. for about .005 seconds. The following explosion sounded like the end of the world...
aaaanyways, I'm sure a 1.8T with an auto will be just fine once I get it chipped and take care of some minor maitenance issues. All I origional intended to do with this thread was get your reactions to chips, but thankfully I've learned alot more... I'll prob try and pick it up sometime early next week if all goes well. So thanks guys...

Just to make a point: http://www.hotrod.com/featuredvehicl...ans/index.html I know a couple of the people that built this car. It has an owner estimated 1,100 hp, runs high 9s, and is using a TH400. I rest my case.
