Default Ram Air

I've searched around for ram air threads, but can't find anything. I have a 97 2.8, with an 034 Motorsports short ram intake....its nice and all, but its just kind of dangling there and rests on the valve cover, which is annoying and cheap looking. I was thinking of doing an actual ram air setup. Any thoughts?

The factory air box is "ram air"

take a pic of your set up and post it up so we can see what you're workin with

Yeah technically speaking, thats less of a "ram-air" setup than the factory air box. The factory set up uses a sealed airbox and a snorkel that pulls cold air in from outside the engine bay. That intake just pulls air from the engine bay, and while it sounds cooler and looks better IMO), it can actually produce worse horse power numbers if the air in the engine bay is really hot.

You could fab up a heat shield of some sort or another and try to get your hands on an OEM intake snorkel, or just go back to complete OEM if you want cooler intake temps.

I think I'm just gonna go with the factory intake setup, found a whole snorkel and airbox on ebay for $20. Would it be possible to put a cone filter in it still?

Ehhh I doubt it. Once you get it you'll see why. There are weird baffles and **** all over the place inside there. If you chop those out you *might* be able to fit a small one, but for the trouble, you may as well pick up a K&N panel filter that drops right in where the stock one would. Make sure you order the airbox for the 2.8, its totally different for the 4 banger

I'm not sure what Audi that came off of, but it wasn't a B5. Here's a picture of the intake setup from my 97 2.8. You can see the snorkel at the bottom of the pic. Its more flat than the one you posted in that eBay link.

The plastic thing on top with the air scoop that sorta looks like Texas is a cover, under that there's an air box that looks like this:

You're gonna want an air box like this one, but that still leaves you without the cover and snorkel. Check the classifeds here, on the zine, or vortex. There's always someone parting out a car and thats the cheapest place to find parts like these.

i put a aem dryflow cone filter in the stock airbox and made a custom pvc pipe to connect it to the opening inside the airbox that goes to the maf. dremmel'd out those baffles. Also ran hose with cone scoop from lower right grill. Trimmed out the back of the grill on one side and ran the scoop and hose from there to the airbox and cut a hole in the airbox to put in the pipe and sealed it. Also did a hose from the side of the radiator to pick up the cold air bouncing off that.

Car runs amazing with this setup and pulls better from 4500 rpms and up to redline. Buddies have en noticed it and joked that it feels like vtec kicked in. Perfectly complimented by an exhaust.

best part is it looks completly stock. doesnt have that gay sucking air sound like hondas do but gives it more throaty deep growl. and the airbox drains any possible moisture and maf is still protected by the filter
