Hi All,

My first post here, sorry it's a question rather than a response! Anyway, my problems is:

My car is a 2000A4 1.8 TQS. When pulling away from staionary it feels as though the reardifferentail sometimes "slips". It is quite slight, almost as thoughI have simply driven over a stone in the road / bad seam in the tarmac. There's no loud bang or knock, just a jolt in the drive. What's strange is that it only does it when you have been driving for about 20 minutes or so. First thing in the morning everything is fine. It also sometimes does it in 2nd gear, accelerating away round or corner.

Does anybody have any ideas what might be causing this? I was under the impression that the quattro drive train was pretty bullett proof?

i'll take a shot...but i know that a4 is known to have the rear differential seals to leak..

 

i don't hear many stories about the rear diff being bad. i know that when my friend's durango's rear diff went bad, he could feel a vibration when accelerating. get your car vagged for tranny codes. also check your diff fluids and tranny fluid

 

You do not have the Haldex system. You have the Torsen system. Haldex is front-wheel-drive and gives power to the rear wheels when it senses slipping.
Could be a rear diff problem.

 

I'm betting bad engine mounts.

It is almost impossible to kill the differential on this car. However the seals do go bad. Mine has been leaking for the last 100K+ miles. I just check the gear oil every year and change it every two.

My diff doesn't seem to have any leaks and the fluid is at the right level.

Funny you should mention engine mounts though.... Yes, the mounts aren't in the best of shape, so far I've changed the snub, the left hand engine mount (looking from the front of the car) and both gearbox mounts. There is still a fair bit of play, not too sure where from though! Diff mount was probably next on the list, or maybe the other engine mount. Would this cause the "slip" feeling I'm getting though, it doesn't do it from stationary, more when the car is rolling slowly i.e. 5 mph - 15 mph. It is normally a single jolt / slip, sometimes two in quick succession....

Hi guys i have the same problem. How do i check the differential and tranny fluid to know when to top off? What type of oil specifically is recommended to use in there? Something special from the dealer or is it something i can pick up from joe's garage? Any pointers to a DIY would be much appreciated thanks
