Default Getting closer....

Hi everyone. Been a while since I have posted about my engine swap.

I have been taking my time because this heat just will not let up here in Houston. I have worked on it a couple of days in the last week. Finally got the engine back in and just about buttoned up today. I have checked the forums a couple of times for answers to question and have been able to find them. This place is full of useful information.

You guys are going to think I am silly but my latest "cant find where this goes" was for the alternator wiring. I bolted it in but did not hook any wiring to it and did not give it a second thought. After going through the wiring and making sure everything was hooked up I found 2 wires that I had no idea where they went. A search of the forums here answered that on too.

Again this place is great and full of info. I cant thank you guys enough for the help both directly and indirectly. I hope the ol girl starts up without much trouble and I can get it back to my son. Then comes the hard part, cleaning the garage back up!

Default re

you don,t have to pull the motor. you can block the motor up and drop the transmission and leave the motor in. i did it that way several times.

Thanks and another quick question.

How much of the front end should I reassemble before trying to start it for the first time?
I realize the cooling system needs to be in place and of course all of the turbo bits. Should I just throw it all back on because I am just that awsome of an Audi mechanic and everything will be perfect the first time?...lol
What has been some of the events you guys have experienced?

Default 1.8T Removal

I'm also in the process of pulling my 1.8T out of the 99.5 A4. (automatic). Result of a T-belt failure...
I have everything off the engine, I was wondering how you you guys remove the engine mounts.
Is it the single bolt on the top, or the bolts into the engine block?

I really want to pull the Tranny as well.
Did you guys sate that it is a bad idea to pull both at once?
Speaking of old chevy's, I rented an engine hoist and pulled the engine+tranny out of my 73 Camaro years ago..
I was thinking of doing the same here.

I cant speak for everyone but the one I am working on is an all wheel drive model and I am sure glad I did not have to pull the tranny.

I unbolted both upper and lower nuts from the engine mounts and took them out of the way.

I replaced the engine because of the same reason, timing belt slippage. It gave a warning (loud rattle from front of engine) but the warning got ignored. So a few hundred dollar repair has turned into almost $3000. Gotta love my son.

I was actually able to pull the engine out and re-install it with-out the use of an engine hoist. A 4 wheel movers dolly and a large floor jack served me well. Not the recommended way I know but I really did not have any difficulties. (you guys can all laugh and point now)

not at all out of the ordinary. i've seen a lot of "creative" solutions: pallet jack, forklift, skateboards (yes skateboards)....

Default Good news.....

Well everything is back in place and I fired the ol girl up this morning. I primed the oil pump to get the oil flowing, at least the oil light is not on. After a few turns of the engine she fired up! No smoke from the exhaust so that is a good sign. No apparent signs of leaks, another good sign.

But the saga continues. Hopefully nothing too earth shattering. The valve train is making too much noise. The engine, I was told, came out of a 99 Passat with 67K on it. Really very clean on the outside so I have no reason to doubt the mileage. I dont know how long the engine had been sitting before I purchased it. Years possibly. The inside of the engine was pretty dry.

Any suggestions? Run Seafoam through it?

This place has been alot of help. Again I thank you in advance.

Seafoam or motor honey is a good way to go. Both products will help oil cling to the engine parts.

Thanks airguard350. I have a can I will add.

I have been surfing around a while and it sounds like the cam chain tensioner may need to be replaced as well. Some of the stuff I have read and vids I have watched sound suspiciously like the ones eminating from under the hood of my sons.
