Default Pull the tranny?

I am in the process of pulling the 1.8T out of my sons Quattro with 5 speed tranny. After crawling in, around, under this car I have to ask. Is it like pulling the engine/tranny from my old school chevies that I normally work on or just pull the engine? I already have the front of the car peeled away and most everything else disconnected and pulled out of the way.

I do understand that if I am pulling the trans that I will have to disconnect the front cv shafts, not a huge deal if I have to. My biggest issue right now is getting the bolts from the cat to the down pipe out. I have been able to snake 2 of them out but the top one closest to the passenger side is just not giving it up. Hopefilly I have not jacked the corners up too bad.

It looks like there is a coupling in the exhust pipe that could be disconnected should I go the route of pulling the engine/trans together.

ANY help/info on this subject is greatly appreciated.

Also the engine I am putting back in is also a 1.8t from a 99 Passat with 67K on it. I have replaced the following on it....

timing belt
TB tensioner
TB idler
water pump
thermostat
belts
valve cover gasket

It has a small oil leak somewhere it looks like. I will check that before I put it in the car. I know the flywheel bolts need to be new and I am putting a new clutch/pressure plate/bearing.

Anything else I should look for before I install?

Thanks for a great sight and any info you might feel me worthy of having.

Vince

Definitely don't pull the trans out too. You're going to see that this is not a hard job at all. As long as the front clip (radiator support) is off, then its pretty straightforward, just jack the motor up a bit to access the bottom bell housing bolts that go thru the oil pan. Pulling a Chevy v8 is way harder lol. Post back here if you get hung up anywhere.

Excellent. Everything on the front is removed. Definately easier to get to the engine than a Chevelle or Camaro.

Will there be any difficulties getting the trans shaft re-aligned with the clutch/pressure plate when putting it back in?
Also do you have any suggestion to getting to the bolts that hold the cat to the turbo? Not a heck of alot of room to work there.

Thanks tons for the advise.

When we did a trans pull (leaving the engine in), we got the two upper bolts on the turbo from above. The inaccessible bolt toward the inside and below was reached from below with a lot of extensions. We slipped the exhaust apart under the car to buy a little wiggle room and were able to get a socket onto the bolt that way.

You could just unbolt it at the end of the downpipe and leave the cat and downpipe attatched until after you pull the engine. Putting the clutch back on, just use a deep socket, 19mm i think, to align it on there straight. When putting the engine back on the input shaft, just get it on the splines and give it a little wiggle. You'll feel it align and then push that bitch in there.

Make sure not to force the engine back onto the spline other wise you can damage the pilot bearing and that means pulling it all out again. Also make sure to keep the engine straight with the transmission as you get them closer, this is at the point the end of the input shaft is going thru the pilot bearing. If you want to make it easier to line up the spline you can always just spin the drive shaft while the transmission is in gear, this spins the input shaft.

Great info everyone. I sure appreciate it. I have not done anything to it in the last couple of days. It is in the triple digits here in the Houston area and seeing as how this is a spare car at the moment, I dont feel the need to kill my self.
I will keep you guys updated on the progress.
Thanks again,
Vince

Weather finally cooperated around Houston. Overcast and about 15 degrees cooler than it has been for the last 3 months. Right around 90 and it finally allowed me to get back to work on the A4. I got the engine out, thanks guys for the info.

After getting it out I see other little issues. The biggest at this point is the breather hose on the drivers side of the engine. It is broken and needs to be replaced. I dont want to try to replace it after the engine is back in. Anyone recommend a place they have used to get one? I have searched around the web and found some but dont know who would be the best choice. Thanks again!
