and the project begins
just finished cleaning it up. picked it up today from a guy off vortex. it was encrusted with road grime but physicly its in great shape. plans are to have it overbored +1mm and drop the compression ratio to 9.0:1. i figured if i have to replace rods to do what i want with the car, i might as well build a spare engine so i dont have any downtime. and of course if i have the chance i might as well increase displacement...

i havnt actualy purchased rods n pistons and whatnot yet. scatt rods are around $400, pauter rods are around $750, which of those depends on what HP numbers and turbo i decide on. pistons and rings are around $600 per set. im just reusing the stock crank which is why im not going 2.0L. i have no idea what they are goin to charge for the overbore/hone but they usualy steam clean the block before they do that anyways.
some signs of damage would be deep scoring or gouges in the cylinder walls, cracks anywhere, any signs of metal on metal contact. the crank thats in there turns effortlessly, no grinding/binding which is a good thing. same thing with the intermediate shaft.
if you really want to be sure you can have the block x-ray'd for internal flaws and micro cracks but thats not usualy necessary unless you are going for ultra high HP.

im thinking 2871r. that will make around the power im lookin for. the +1mm will just help it spool that much faster. its a daily driver and i really dont need more power then that.
im mostly doing this to learn how, and since its a spare engine i can spend as much time as i need on it. im looking into going to school for this stuff in january so this is kind of a crash course before i do that.
do you think i really need standalone as opposed to my origional idea of getting a unitronics bt file and having it fine tuned on a dyno?

iono mayn. pm cincytt for expert advice lol. i don't think you'll need standalone with that turbo though. so i'm guessing you're going with scat rods? you're gonna have everything weighed and balanced though right? o you might want to invest in a MBC if you don't already have one. a turbo timer will help too

You're far from standalone so don't worry bout that. Besides you wouldn't pass emissions. Who did you choose for mani? 2871r is the best DD so far IMO. Sounds like all you needed were rods but its cool you're still going through with the rest. What made you stay with the crank and lower comp?
Hiwords: you're thinking of an EBC I believe, which is also unnecessary, instead of a turbo timer
