Secondly, do you have a B5? What year is your A4?

I have a 2001 so my control might be different than yours.
^ If the auto mode is on, the "AUTO" light on top would lit. Turning it off is simply to adjust the "fan speed" located on the right side of the screen (the one with the fan/flower looking dial).
Hope that helps.

It sounds like what you're trying to say is you installed a new climate control unit and when you turn on your car, the climate control comes automatically and it comes on full blast.
Solutions:
1. Bad resistor: if you can't change the fan settings
2. Climate control needs calibration: if it comes on full power when you start the car, but you can then adjust it using the controls. This sometimes has to be done when a new unit is installed. You can fix this with a VAG-COM.
3. You installed the wrong climate control unit for your car
If you can, use a VAG-COM and look for error codes.
My Recommendation is to take it to a dealership and have them sort out the issue for you.
