Default Possible clutch issues please help!

My car has 258k miles with 120k on the engine and transmission. Its a 1996 quatro with a 2.8 and a 5 speed. I bought it figuring it would need some work soon for cheap. I drove it about 60 miles just fine, then let it sit a few days. The next time I drove it I took it for a easy short two mile ride, then I stepped on it, I went from 2nd to 3rd and hit about 60 in third then shifted into 5th and let it coast. When I got in town I tried to shift into from 3rd to 2nd but it wouldn't go so i put it into 3rd and drove home. In order to shift into R I had to shut off the car. It would shift into N but not a gear. When the cars off it shifts into any gear fine. Sometimes when I go fast and shift from 1st to 2nd it goes and sometimes 3rd and goes into 4th and 5 th fine. But In order to downshift from 3rd to 2nd or 1st I have to stop and shut it off. If I turn the car on in 2nd it takes off fine. My theory is that the clutch isnt fully ingaging or disengaging but it let me take off fine so idk. Sometimes if I floor it in 1st and let off the gas real quick it make a rattle for about a second but idk from where. Sorry this is so long but any help Is welcome thanks alot I'm fairly new to audis

Also I'm not sure if this is normal but if I don't press the clutch and try to start the car in gear it rolls.

Sounds like the clutch is jammed against the flywheel - happened in my 300ZX. One of the springs in the pressure plate broke out and jammed the disk against the flywheel. Might be your issue. Could also be a failed slave cylinder. Read through the forum - there have been several such posts recently and someone may have solved a similar issue.

I had a z31 1988 300zx before this Audi, best car I ever owned. If it's that problem with the clutch does that basically mean I need a whole new clutch?
