Default painting wheels..help!

so I just bought some s4 Avus 17" with great rubber off of a audizine member in SD to replace my 16" sport stockers. They have a good amount of rash on them with minor slashes and scratches.

I have a black A4 and I was thinking paint them black but leave the center caps stock silver. I need help though should I go

1)flat black and clear coat

2)semi gloss

3)gloss

or I was thinking if I could find gunmetal spray paint that would look good too.

any thoughts would be great..anyone with experience with auto spray paint as far as should I go with the glossier paints with or without clearcoat etc.

thanks alot..will be posting pics of the whole process when I finally decide

Hi mate,

I'm a fan of black rims with silver or chrome etc, I'm not a painter, but for my 2 cents I'd consider a satin - semi gloss finish.

You will HATE how your wheels look when they are dirty if you go with anything besides full gloss. Use a high gloss paint AND clear coat. It will not be ridiculously shiny unless you wet sand between every coat.

I used Krylon Rust Tough Enamel. I recommend using that instead.

You don't need to use a primer. I wouldn't. I only sanded before the first coat to smooth down some of the rough edges. The rims on my wheels are pretty chewed up in a couple of places, but the paint does a great job of hiding it. So far, the paint is holding up VERY well. I don't have a single chip on any of the wheels. Do a lot of coats of both color and clear.

sounds good..I already bought a can of primer so I will do a light coat of that..I also bought some bondo like putty to fill in some cracks (there was more than I thought after cleaning them) so no sanding after the paint and before the clear coat?

I really would skip the primer. That Rust Tough Enamel is specifically designed to stick to metal and your primer probably isn't. As for the putty...I can't see that lasting on the wheels (different expansion coefficients), but I know that they do make metal filler epoxy and you can buy it at AutoZone...that would be your best bet if you really want to fill in some cracks, but you would be surprised by what manner of sins the paint'll cover or disguise.

You could sand very lightly with maybe 1500 grit between the final color and the first clear coat, but I didn't.
