UPDATE:
okay, i finished flushing the system out. i ran the car without the thermostat and the car temp didnt heat up at all so i think the water pump is working. I also tested the thermostat in bopiling water and it opened up and closed so the thermostat works. once the water came out clear, i put the thermostat back in and drove it full of water (for testing purposes so i didnt waste 26 dollars wasting the coolant if it is gonna have to be drained again) and the car still overheats. Now im at a loss of what could be wrong. people have been telling me most likely a bad head gasket....... which i hope not. Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you have a tear between a coolant feed and a cylinder it'll overheat (happened on my wife's Civic). There are test kits available that'll sniff out combustion gases and confirm a bad head gasket. If you've burped the hell out of the system, it might be time to look into that.
