Options for when your A4 is worth less than the repair bill
Hello everyone, first time/long time!
It's finally happened that with a rattling/grinding bearing sound as I drive, which my local non-specializing mechanic said is coming from the transfer case and is likely the famous thousands-of-dollar Quattro repair, I will finally have to bury my long-serving 1998 A4 2.8.
With the many problems that have accumulated in the 255k km (160k miles), the cost of repairing outpaces what I could sell it for; quarter panel damage, mysterious oil leak, ABS computer... So if I were to buy a new or used car tomorrow, a dealer would take it off my hands for... $0.
This is the part that bugs me, since there are hundreds of dollars in parts in the car, like the great interior, airbags... well I guess that's it. In my brief research I notice most people advise against trying to part out a car unless you've got the property to store it for the 2+ years it will take. Which I don't, nevermind the wisdom of putting effort into something for years to make several hundred dollars at most...
I guess I'm asking if there are any other options to maximize the value other than handing the keys over to someone and looking the other way? Do junkyards give money for a working car you drive up? Or do I have to pay them to take it? I don't even know. Do you think it's worthwhile to look for someone/somewhere who needs it for parts?
Thanks for any ideas! I figure this is a topic that will come up more and more with the B5s in the coming years...
