Default Options to replace 1.8T AEB motor

I was offered a clean A4 that had been overheated for a grand. It's a 1.8T 5spd AWD.

Ive been searching around looking for an AEB motor but they are damn hard to find. I want to throw something in there with high miles just to have for a beat around car in the winters.

So my question is... What are all my options here?

Rebuild?
other alternative motors?
anyone have a high mileage motor?

Really, I could just get a block and change out the block, have the head machined true and just go from there.

AEB engine should be the easiest to find since they are what was used from 97-99. Check the classifieds here, on audizine and audiworld. Also check car-part.com. Your options are AEB or AEB if you don't want to go broke converting the car to DBW, etc. to accomidate an ATW or AWM motor.
In fact I remember recently seeing a complete running used engine on audizine for less than $1500.

If you cant find a used 1.8t I can always have one built for you to what ever specs you want.

I would love to swap over an S4 set-up, but thats not in my best interest at the moment. I'm really just looking to get this car running for a winter beater and have the bike for the summer. If i can install an engine for around a grand that would be my price point.

I will look around to see what I can find..

Whats the average rebuild cost for these? just basic rings, bearings and machining. Probably as much as a used engine .

Just depends on if there is any damage to the cylinder wall and if it over heated there is most likely damage there. Also when the car over heats you need to make sure the head did not warp.

If I had it rebuilt the machine shop could take care of the cyl. walls. I'm also not worried about the head, I dont believe it was hot enough to warp it to no return. Even if i replaced the motor, I would keep the head and just scrap the lower end.

I'm still on the look out so we will see.
