To the OP, your best ally right now is time. If you see a car you like, go look at it. You can get a way better feel for the seller face to face than on the phone. Not to mention you get a much better picture of the car.
If you're up in the air over the 1.8 vs 2.8, see if you can drive some of each to get an idea of what it would be like. When I started looking, I thought I wanted a 1.8. Bone stock, it was a DOG. Settled on the 2.8 for reliable Hp. The interior upgrade was nice too (1.8 is vinyl and 2.8 is leather).
Another thing to consider is facelift vs pre-facelift. Many people here switch to the facelift equipment (headlights, tail lights, doors, etc.). If you think you would want to switch to all of the facelift stuff, I would rule out looking at anything '98 and older.
