Exclamation Which oil pan is this, and do I need to drop the subframe?

My father crunched the oil pan on his

2001 A4 Avant Quattro 1.8T (or at least that's what the VIN says)

However, the oil pan doesn't look like the ones that I've seen online -- it looks like it should drop straight off (e.g. like this one: Oil Pan Audi A4 Quattro Avant VW Passat 1.8 2001 2002), but the internet is full of horror stories of having to drop the subframe, losing bolts in bell housings, etc.

Question 1:
Is this a 2001 A4 1.8T oil pan?

Question 2:
Do I need to drop the subframe to get it off? Looks straightforward, but looks can be deceiving.

Question 3:
Do I need a gasket for this, or should I just use RTV?

Question 4:
Anyone know how many book hours this is? Can I do it outside on jackstands reasonably quickly?

Update: This looks like a transmission pan. Guess I'll have to change the ATF...

Yes, those pics are the transmission pan. Easy to replace, but refilling the trans can be a bit involved because it gets filled from the bottom. If you go to Blauparts.com, there is a write up of how to re-fill the trans. They also have filter and ATF kits.

If it were the engine oil pan that needed to be removed, yes, it's a significant PITA.

Good luck

Having just completed this particularly nasty job, I must say I like the idea shown in the link you posted. If I were doing this job regularly, that method would be a God send. That said, I'm wondering whether dropping the rear of the "U" frame causes any potential alignment issues. Certainly the Bentley manual specifically states to NOT undo the rear sub frame bolts, but I found it was the only way to drop the sub frame far enough for decent access.

The real gem here is the modified engine mounts. I already have one that is damaged and can be cut up, I think I'll find another in case I ever need to do this again.

Good find!!

Thanks
