Oil Gunge
I was cleaning the car at the weekend and happened to lift the oil cap and noticed that there is a layer of black gunge inside. it was quite thick.
I was just wonering is this normal for a car with a good service history which i'm assuming included oil changes?
Can i drain the oil and use something to dissolve and/or flush out the gunge.

What is gunge?
White reside means moisture. It's normal. Black sludge means sludge, which is not normal.
Put some Seafoam in the crankcase. Run the car to help clean all the oil passages and then change the oil and filter using an Audi OE replacement filter and full synthetic oil.
If it's a 1.8T, change the oil every 3K-5K miles, religiously. If it's a V6, 10K miles or once a year is ok, but 5K is a better interval if you are worried about dirty oil.

We call it sludge here.
