Default Oil and Filter? What kind??

Just picked up a 1999 Audi A4 1.8L Turbo - FWD...

I'm switching over to Amsoil from Mobil 1... do you all use 5W30?

Also, what type of filter do you use? I know these have a sludge problem, so I want to make sure I have everything I can to prevent this...

Also, this car didn't come with an owners manual... so how much goes in??

I used the search option on here but couldn't find anything... so please dont respond saying use the search option.

Thanks

Patrick

Most use 5w-30, some use 5w-40 and 0w-40. I use 0w-40 (Im pretty sure thats a mobil 1 only viscosity). It takes my pre 99 AEB engine takes 4.3 quarts so im sure yours is about the same. Its good to use a big filter to keep the oil cooler, so i put in about 4.5 quarts becuase of the bigger filter. Use a MANN or MAHLE filter, W94025 is the MANN number i believe. You can buy these filters from ecstuning.com or rockauto.com for sure, i dont know about where else, ecstuning lets you buy in bulk to save.

either use a large OEM filter, or a mobil1 M301 filter. i also use 0w40 year round. its not only available from mobil1 but easier to find from that company then any other.

You can always run a NAPA 1333 filter, it will hold another .5 qrt since the thing is HUGE! Also, as long as you use full syn and change it within 4-5k miles, you dont have to worry about sludge. That was an issue when people and the dealer where using nonsyn oil and running it over 4k miles.

also no need to spend more for the oil when mobil1 0w40 and castrol 5w40 can be found local and are approved vw oils

Default 0w40

0W40 and that's not a Mobil only viscosity. Amsoil will make it for four stroke atv's and sleds and such. the filter on the other hand is a Ford filter. pick your preferred filter and ask for a 302 filter in that brand. I usually use the Napa gold.

Why do you all run a 0w40? I looked up some stuff and it said to run a 5w30. I understand using a bigger filter, and the one on there is actually a ford filter, so that's actually what I was going to use again.
