Newbie shamelessly asking for advice :-)
Hi I am the proud owner of an 1996 A4 1.9tdi Avant with 220,000 miles on the clock from Bangor, N.Ireland. I bought the car a few months back for £300 and have been enjoying the great fuel economy compared to my other car (Lexus GS300).
So far I have replaced the front seats, centre console, door trims and fitted a stereo inside the car, replaced the drivers door handle & filled remote locking to the pump in the boot. I have replaced the thermostat, engine oil and fuel filter and fitted blanking plates to remove the egr pipe. The car is now quite nice to drive, economical & I'm enjoying working at it but I now need a bit of advice.
Sometimes when I accelerate hard from a standstill and rev the engine hard I will get a sudden loss of power followed by spluttering and thick black smoke. This improved after removing the egr pipe but on two occasions its happened really badly causing the car to stop & I've struggled to get it going again. I have an oil leak from the pipe going into the bottom of the intercooler, I removed this pipe and nothing came out but it was really oily. I'm not really sure what to do next, one idea is to replace or recondition the turbo.. Has anyone any advice they wouldn't mind sharing?
Thanks
Andrew

Its a diesel motor so its a little different from 1.8t's and 2.8's but I guess if you are leaking oil, take all that stuff apart when you get the time. Maybe its a leaky seal or maybe like you said, bad turbo, bad return line, or something else. I never had a turbo motor so I don't know really.
Taking it apart should let you converge on the culprit.
