NEW FUTURE OWNER OF a AUDI A4

Read the sticky posts at the top of the forum - they're in place exactly for your question and will guide you in model/engine selection. One rule of thumb - get quattro. It's one of the main reasons for buying an Audi. If it's a Frontrack (2wd), skip it. Doesn't matter if you're in Fargo or Phoenix, get quattro.

well, as far as the quattro thing goes, yes I do agree, you need quattro, but honestly, not if you live in a warm climate. For the 2WD Frontracks, not only does it improve gas mileage, but it also means cheaper repairs and you dont have to worry about paying for the quattro-related parts(transmission parts are expensive). I have a quattro and I LOVE it (I will never drive a F or RWD again), but my buddy has a 99 FWD A4 and it works great in the snow (We live in MI and have plenty of snow). He does have brand new blizzaks, but he hasnt gotten stuck yet with the FWD. So, in all, if you live in a warm climate, dont have a lot of bucks to spare on parts, and dont have the cash to purchase the quattro (usually frontracks are anywhere from $500-$2000 cheaper depending on year/condition), then I'd say go for the 2WD if you find one in great shape. Good luck, hope this helps

Make sure the seller can give you all maintenance records, and be sure he/she has met all required oil changes. Get the engine checked by a technician before buying, and look for signs of excessive sludge. Sludging is a known issue on these models, and I believe Audi will still cover severe sludge damage under a special extended warranty IF you have records proving that the car has been properly maintained (i.e. has had all required oil changes) over its lifetime.
Oh, and like everyone else has been saying, make sure its Quattro...
