that TB tensioner looks like the updated one so your timing may be done, but while the nose is off you might just wanna do it anyway.

Why was this car disected in the first place? Looks like he was going to part it out, do you know why? Looks like a fun project though. I picked up a $1500 project car not long ago myself. Mine has 50k more miles, but was intact

That's the same question I was about to ask because I as a buyer would like to know why the car was taken so far apart. Was he planning to part it out or was there a problem that needed to be fixed?

he took it off to see what the problem, since the car had no boost. he said he thinks it's the turbo and the cam tensioner. i checked it out myself and the turbo is bad but i don't think there is anything wrong with the tensioner. i also found a crack in the pipe going into the turbo(last pic, circled) which could be another possibility. will find out soon.

You don't need to remove the front end to remove the turbo/turbo plumbing, or check the cam tensioner. How did you verify that the turbo is bad?

it has a lot of shaft play. by a lot i mean, a lot. he also took off the nose to check everything else too and not just the turbo.

Why did they take off the valve cover and oil pan?

Good deal on the car. Have fun!

I got a great deal on my A4 too. I paid $600 and bought an engine for $350, that was a lucky find! Its probably been 5 weeks or so since I have had it running, I love it. You'll love yours too. I hope it doesnt cost too much to get it going for you. I was lucky to find an engine so cheap. I found it in the local classifieds.
