Default Need some advice..

Spent some time over the last few days and replaced both rear wheel bearings, both rear springs ( one was broke) and the rear diff oil.
Also changed engine oil and filter this morning.
I then took it for a run and when at a stop it now seems to rev up a bit before 1st gear engages (with a small clunk ).
Once it is moving it changes fine, but at least 3 or four times when I had come to rest and went to move off again, 'CLUNK'...

Would this have anything to do with changing the rear diff oil, does it need to settle in or something???
I know that I damaged the abs sensor on one side when trying to remove it ( decided to follow the wire and just unplug the other side from below the back seat )
Would this maybe have something to do with it??

Any help appreciated...

I'm thinking if the abs sensor is damaged, it's causing it to see a different wheel speed than the other wheels when coming to a stop - possibly activating your abs which could sound like a clunk. When the abs activates near idle speed - that puts a load on the engine, which may cause the engine to want to catch up which is your rpms raising a little, and then settling.

Apologies...

It's a '97 A4 2.8 v6 Auto

and basically when i'm sitting stopped ( at lights, say ) when I accelerate the revs pick up till 12-1500 before the autobox engages.. The clunk seems to be from the front and I presume is just the box engaging at too high a revs..

I'm not an abs whiz, but your brakes might be activating when they shouldn't if your abs sensor is damaged. To rule this out-unplug your abs control module or take your abs fuse out and then see what happens. Be safe when driving as you won't have abs functionality.

Now that I think about it, I had the same problem on my 97 1.8t a while back. It turned out that even after I removed the abs fuse that it still did it, and didn't stop until I unplugged the abs control module (which doesn't make sense..) Do that. You just pull on the tab on the wiring harness and the whole plug will slide up/off. If you have vag com it wouldn't hurt to check for faults that may not trigger the cel. If it's not abs related then I don't know what happened. You sure you have the axles all the way through the hubs w/ center axle bolts tight? The differential fluid change and springs should have nothing to do with it.

Read this about that code. First clear it and see if it comes back. If it does then follow those steps in the link (you have vag com right?) But it would have nothing to do with your current issue.
