I have a 2001 1.8TQM, bought it with 73k, now has 106k. There is no way i could have afforded the upkeep on this vehicle when i was 17 - it just now fits into my budget, and i have a salaried job.
Personally, i think you might want to start with a N/A engine - i really like subaru's. The 2.5 RS is an absolutely fantastic N/A engine, mated to a great AWD system (the guy saying the manual subaru's arnt good in the snow....dunno if he ever owned one in a snowy state, but they are great) - and it has very very high modding potential. They are also cheaper than an Audi in every way.
Go with what you really want - nobody wants a car they were forced to get.

my dad's toy (i drive it much more than him though !)

(69 chevelle ss 396 (blew engine) so swapped with 454, and 5 speed tranny!... its a beast)

lol i dont hav a problem with chevy's i hav a 96 camaro my self, my dad a 67 pushing out around 400 horse

Yea sti's are nice but cost a lot more to purchase. im kinda in the same position as you im 16 and also interested in an A4 B5 still looking around. these cars do seem to need alot of repairs but with any used car ur gonna need repairs. Why not make the repairs on a car you like. Well good luck on finding a good audi.

The 1.8T has been a great motor for me, I have owned this car for 6 years now and the most expensive motor repair has been the coils. As for the rest of the car I would say window regulator. If you do your maintenance and on occasion crawl under it looking around these cars are as solid as they come.

I have DD 300hp for quite some time with no repairs at all just oil and plugs. BTW if you plan on lowering you car know that H&R Sport springs eat my front tires about twice as fast as stock sport springs. Yes I keep it alined, but the 19x8.5' my not help....

The car isn't unreliable but some things do go wrong with these cars especially the 1.8T. If you have the time and experience to perform work on these cars, and also the sources for parts, it wouldn't be too bad owning one. But if you don't have the time and experience to perform work on the car, it can get pretty expensive as some labor costs more than the part it self.

Modding the car is a different story. It's a given that things will probably break as you turn up the boost, lower it, or any sort of aftermarket modifications you might want to do. All in all, if you plan on modding it, make sure you have some spare money incase things do break on the car (for maintenance).

I need to tell you that Audis aren't like Evos or STi's. These cars come with fancier interiors in which it was aimed more towards luxury class. If you're expecting something as fast as those other cars, you're looking at the wrong thing. Also you need to note that it's gonna be more expensive to fix up these cars to be able to compete with the stage 2 or stage 3 Evos, STi's, or even SRT4's.

(flynnr) so i talked to my dad. he likes ur chevelle lol. unfortunetley he is still worried about working on it, and would rather see me in sumthing like a srt4 (not that i dont like the srt4 but its a tad bit out of my price range) so it seems the only way to really convince him is to have another chevy guy tell him how simular/different it is so please tell. also being 19 and owning this car what is ur insurance like?

kayakman is another 17 y/o in H.S. who said he got a good deal on insurance because he drove an Audi, and not a honda or something like that... I'm surprised that he hasn't chimed in on this thread yet...
