I did a little more testing.

I unplugged the VSS and made up two jumpers. One going from the VSS signal output to the plug signal input.

I connected two separate grounds going from the sensor and plug directly to the battery's negative terminal. I put the wheel back on and gave it a spin while my brother watched the speedometer and VCDS output with no change.

I'm sorry BaseDrifter, but your thread is quite entertaining Yet VERY informative. Oh, and I believe I have a headlight switch you can have if you want.

Have you tested for continuity from the sensor to the cluster? How does the plug for the sensor look? If it has one of those rubber boots, pull back the boot to look at the connections on the back of the plug.

I don't know that everyone will have this problem with them, but if you do some searching online you'll find that others have had problems with this part.

Well, the part is cheap Audi B5 A4 Quattro 1.8T Search SiteSearch 035103245A ES#257303 Bleeder Valve - 035103245A

Even cheaper at genuineaudiparts.com:

2001 Audi A4 Quattro Parts - genuinevwaudiparts.com

So after doing research, I'll have to make a decision to use OEM or this 034 after market one. The labor isn't cheap

Yep, had continuity from sensor to input on cluster. It does have one of those boots just like the reverse plug I sent you. I guess today I'll go back and check that out. But both wires have continuity.

Text does a really poor job of portraying my level of frustration with this. There are only so many components in this system. I've checked or replaced basically everything. At what point do I call over a spirit talker?

Dont you have another cluster you could try? otherwise I would suggest as it was earlier to try a lab scope and see what you get from the sensor. If you made a jumper - perfect use that to verify the sensor is sending something to start with.

I sold my old cluster a few weeks ago.

The reason I keep going back to the wiring is because the speedometer has worked intermittently. A few days ago the speedometer worked for 15 miles. No fluctuation, accurate speed confirmed by my GPS. I parked the car and it didn't work when I started the car again.

Dont get thrown off course- it is all basic check or verify the basics first.

may be something loose inside the cluster? that pin was pretty well tweaked
