is my engine ruined?

is my engine ruined?
Ive been kinda ignoring my check engine oil light warning for a couple of days. Because i checked the oil and the level was ok. so because my interior gauge doesnt light up most of the time, i would ignore the warning beep because i knew what it was and i thought something was just wrong with the gauges. well, i added a quart of oil just to be on the safe side and when i started the car the engine started ticking really loud. running like a diesel. if anyone has experienced this problem let me know what might bee going on.

Why the hell would you add oil if it didnt need it? First thing you should do is have the codes read, you can do that at an autozone or simular place. Most times when people say diesel, it means the cam tensioner is bad and needs replaced. If you VVT, it is pricey, and if you dont, it isnt to bad

well if he keeps running it, it may die. engine dont instantly lock up when they loose oil pressure as im sure you know. the ticking could be the hydrolic lifters not having oil pressure behind them. then again it could be the chain tensioner like you said.

the low oil pressure warning light and beeps will only come on when the oil pressure is dangerously low (Hence it being called the idiot light) by the time you receive this warning light chances are your engine is already in serious trouble and should not be run further. Adding excess oil when it is not needed will only compound issues by further damaging other components in your engine.
My advice is - DO NOT DRIVE THIS VEHICLE ANYMORE....
wherever it is either call a tow truck or put it on a trailer to get it to the emergency room.

My car recently did the same thing that you mentioned.. it turned out that my valve cover gaskets were shot, so i replaced them and it fixed the oil light, and the clicking noise from the engine. Your car may be leaking oil so therefore your losing oil pressure, which is causing your check oil light to turn on. The best way to find out is to pull one of the spark plugs and look and see if there is oil in with the spark plug.

first off give us the basic, codes you may have had read or stored, milage, year, engine. ticking isnt good but it is normal on cold start up to have a bit of tick from teh hydralic lifters as the car ages, the ticking can also be mistaken for the injectors which are quite loud. also how much oil was in teh engien when you added more oil, if you have the 1.8t it most likely sludge int eh pick up tube which would explaint eh oil light and the ticking noise bcause oil wouldnt be getting to teh lifters/cams/etc. get back to us with all that, it may be as easy as running seafoam in the crankcase for 30 miles and changing the oil, or you may be on the path to replacing the engine.
