my 2.8 sounds like a diesel on cold start up.

It's difficult to "check" the cam chain tensioners. For most people it'll just get loud enough that it becomes completely obvious that is the problem and then replace it. Oil level could have something to do with it also. I just assumed that you would have checked that before asking this question.

well i cant check the oil level right now because i just ran it, but i also assumed that i would still have a healthy amount of oil,because of no signs of leaks in the driveway, or burning of oil.

i've been dragging my feet on changing the oil because mobile 1 is so frickin expensive :/

Most higher mileage 2.8's will burn up to a qt between oil changes. If it's been 3k miles and you haven't topped it off then I'd expect it to be a little low.

he had said he had changed the oil about 200 miles before i bought it, i've drivin it about 1700 miles, and topped it off at 800 miles when i had it. so only about 1000 miles.

Ah.. Well, just keep tabs on that sound to see if it comes back or gets worse. An oil pressure test would still not be a bad idea. You can get a kit and DIY for about $15.
