Motor mounts, snub mount

Motor mounts, snub mount
I am noticing a lot of movement of the shifter.
Here and there read about snub mount and motor mounts.
Since we have longitudinal engine:
a) what does the snub mount really do?
b) i would guess rotational movement of the engine is dampened/controlled by the motor mounts (under the drive shafts on each side)
What makes my shifter move (for example when getting on/off the gas pedal; engaging the clutch, etc.) and what controls it?
What is out there to improve from
- worn, old, soft factory
- as new/OEM
- firmer/less movement than OEM, but comfotrable
- autocross streetracer harsh; noise, vibrations. For the hardcore
