is the consensus 0-40 in cold states and 5-40 in warmer states? ive always used mobil 1 0-40 in southern cal and it always feels like its too thin and makes the valves chatter.... im doing an oil change tomorrow and thinking about switching to castrol's 5-40, recommendations/advice?

I've heard valve chatter with 5w-30 after running the engine for several hours.

MANN makes oem oil filters for audi,vw,bmw,ect...
you can just go to the dealer and get oem and it will be MANN

MANN filters are even used on the bugatti veyrons.. which has a w16 motor
which is simply a VW motor design that started with w8's. point being MANN is the way to go.. neither the less k&n is all "preformance" and what not sometimes oem parts are what you should stick with.

None of this means that Mann is the best. It means that the VW doesn't think they're bad, that they are readily available to VW, and that they were relatively cheap. I wouldn't recommend against using Mann but nothing here says they're better than or even as good as M1/Amsoil/K&N/etc.

0w40 or 5w40. 10w30 is not for European cars.

i guess the brand of the oil dont matter as much as the viscosity you put in.

I think if you get very hot days, 10w-30 should be fine, in my opinion. Like i mentioned before, I use 5w-30 during summer and will hear the lifters. Im going to try castrol next spring.

The first number in the oil weight means it's a thick as straight 0weight when cold, meaning that there's no difference between 0w40 and 5w40 when up to temp. If you have valve noise I would run a bit of seafoam through the oil for a couple of miles, that stuff cleans your motor like nothing else.
