I was getting a nasty misfire for a hot minute...I replaced the coil packs, spark plugs, new MAF, cleaned injectors, fuel system cleaner, etc. It still was misfiring when in boost! I unplugged my battery, let it set for about 10 minutes, then just put my key in the ignition and let it reset. No check engine light and she runs better than ever! After all that, I learned a very VERY valuable lesson...get a damn VAG-COM lol.

I'm starting to come over to the side of thinking that a K&N really is crap in these cars.
You may want to check the coil packs. They're not as much an issue on 2000s but I've had to replace mine twice now on my '01. I had same conditions you describe, misfire under boost and no CEL. Sometimes it would flash but never stayed on. Car ran fine driving like a granny. Local dealer replaced them for free this time since they're under recall.

Seem like this issue has been coming up alot lately.

Ill have to check the coils on mine, as Nothing else seems to be working.

Is there recall info on them, or a way to see which one(s) are bad?

Recall only covers 1.8t engines 2001+

edit: Fox have you tried the ICM? That seems to be a problem piece for earlier models.

Im going threw the same thing....when i drive the car normally, its fine. When i boost over 10 psi my cel flashes then stays on. when i check the code it tells me misfire cyl 4. I erased the codes and switched coil packs but still the same problem and the same code. This weekend im going to switch injectors to see what happens. Until then ill be driving like an old lady lol

Check the fuel pressure. Make sure the MAF Sensor is clean. Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Good luck

I found my problem. I changed my spark plug to a colder plug and regap them and the problem went away.now im boosting to 17 psi and running like a champ. I read it on one of the VW forums. it was in the faq section. Maybe this might be your problem.

Well at the moment my dv is making a buzzing slash quacking noise. So I think that might be a big cause.

But I am going to change the plugs this weekend and see if that helps. What did you gap em at?

Well there's your problem. I don't know how a duck got stuck in your DV but you need to fix that.
