OK, possibly looking to move from my Jetta wagon to an Avant B5.
I noticed on the US Govt Fuel Economy website that the 1.8T and the 2.8 are listed as roughly the same mileage overall.
I am wondering what people are getting real world for the 2.8 and the 1.8T.
I have the 1.8T in my Jetta wagon and am getting about 28 on the hwy.

I live in a very hilly area. I don't do much "highway" driving. A lot of backroads, and in town. I am a pretty heavy-footed driver. My overall average is about 20-22 mph. When I went to Jersey, I averaged about 30-32 mph highway.
2001 B5 A4 1.8tqm, btw.

I can easily register just over 30mpg at 65mph on the freeway w/ the Passat wagon (1.8T, tip). I have not tracked it exactly, but I don't think the 12V 2.8 is too much worse -- probably 25-27mpg highway. My 1996 A4's one big compensation is its very tall gearing -- it turns just over 2000 RPM at 65mph.
