Default Mechanic Says Transmission?

Hi Everyone Im back with a different problem this time a more serious one..

I was driving to the gas station to get some drinks and everything was perfectly fine.. When I got back into my car to start it, the car felt VERY weak, so I continue to drive just wanting to get home. As I accelerate, it would go up to 20MPH and start dying down, so I give it a little more gas and it would spike up to 5k RPM while mph dropped(as if i was in neutral). As I try to accelerate to keep up with traffic nothing happens at all while im stepping on the gas pedal. After a couple seconds it would respond again but the problem start all over in the same order {20mph, 5k rpm spike, no gas etc etc.}

When I got home finally, I drove it around my neighborhood and the car worked fine!

I ended up driving it into a shop the next day and no problems. Left the car over night the mechanic said that I need a new transmission and it would cost me about 6000$ est. Or take it to another shop that specialize in tranmissions to rebuild it.. The car drive good sometimes and sometime it doesnt.. Do you think the mechanic was right? Has anyone else ever experiance this problem? Any advice/opinions will help

Sorry for long post just trying to not leave out details

take it to another shop. preferably someone who works on vw/audi cars and have them vag it or test drive it. With that estimate, you might as well do a manual conversion.

I need it done.. but yes 6k is a rip off.. my options are buy a used one and take it to another shop to install or have a friend of a friend install.. or take it to a tranmission specialize shop that the previous shop refered me to and get it rebuilt. I dont know how much they would charge for a rebuilt.. What do you guys think would be more cheaper route.. Cause 6k is more than what i paid for the whole car lol.. I dont wanna go pass 3k for this whole process if thats not possible, then i'll go buy a mountain bike LOL
